"Having Rowan work with me on learning to understand my body better through my nervous system has made a huge difference for me and the work I do. The work is often triggering and by being able to FEEL my reactions and help my body to manage them means I am less stressed and able to better manage myself and importantly the signals others are reading from me. I particularly love Rowan's singing bowls and how much they relax me. I always sleep better after a session and feel calmed and re-energised as the same time. It's as though my body has been cleansed and I can go back to the work with fresh eyes and mind, ready to go again. I would not hesitate to recommend him and his work has become a vital part of the work we do with others, incorporating it into conversation days and workshops. It's made a huge difference to our audiences too.
Rowan works on and empowers recognition of the impacts of racism on our bodies and in particular our nervous systems, all of which results in long term racial trauma and manifests itself in ways we do not associate with the trauma. From there, Rowan promotes 'somatic' recovery, enabling us to not only recover from the traumas we are subjected to on a daily basis, but also gives us the strength to build up our resilience to them. He helps us through our bodies to understand that we cannot alone stop the repeated racial trauma."
"At Hackney Council, we got to know Rowan through his work with anti-racist Cumbria and experienced his depth of knowledge and understanding when he delivered a workshop on antidoting racial trauma at our recent anti-racist praxis conference, which was highly praised and recommended by all the participants.
Rowan is a gifted, enthusiastic, and dedicated practitioner and any organisation that commissions Rowan gets a wealth of professional skills, but also his special ability to empathise and connect with participants. He has a wealth of learned and original exercises and strategies that engage participants fully. As an educator and somatic practitioner, he is consistently innovative and disciplined; his innovative and pedagogical accomplishments testify to this."
"When I went to see Rowan I didn’t feel like myself and after some serious racist stuff at school I wanted to try and get back to feeling like the old me. I was suffering with anxiety and panic attacks and couldn’t sleep. If I met new people that reminded me of the man at my school I thought they would do what he did so I was not good with certain people and places. Rowan taught me how to breath which seemed strange cos we all know how to breathe. But he showed me special breathing exercises that made me feel calm and I can do them any time any where which is really cool and now I can do them and people don’t even know I am doing it. He helped me lots and since that day with him every day I am feeling more and more like the old me the me before I allowed them racists to change me. I am 16 and I have moved on now. But I have only moved on because people like Rowan helped me and believed I could"
